There are two forms of non-invasive (stage 0) breast cancer. One is called lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) and the other is called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). These two forms of non-invasive breast cancers are treated very differently. We will describe the treatment of both forms of non-invasive breast cancer in detail.
LCIS Treatment Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is not cancer. It is just a signal of increased risk of developing breast cancer. Lobular carcinoma lesions usually do not grow to become breast cancer; in fact the risk of breast cancer development is increased not only.... Click on the above link for more information on LCIS Treatment. DCIS Treatment Unlike lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a precancerous condition. There are several treatment options available for ductal carcinoma in situ.... Click on the above link for more information on DCIS Treatment. Sentinel lymph node biopsy for DCIS Sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node in the system of lymphatic drainage of the part of breast that is involved with breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ. The first draining lymph node can be identified by various techniques.... Click on the above link for more information on Sentinel lymph node biopsy. |
Factors Associated with increase risk of lymph node involvement Since axillary lymph node dissection is not routinely done in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ, more and more surgeons are using sentinel lymph node dissection in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ to determine if there is occult microscopic involvement.... Click on the above link for more information on Factors Associated with increase risk of lymph node involvement. Adjuvant radiation therapy Omission of breast radiation after breast conservation surgery is associated with higher incidence of recurrence rate. This is true for both ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive breast cancer. The chance of local recurrence of breast cancer is reduced from 27% to 12% by giving radiation therapy after lumpectomy.... Click on the above link for more information on Adjuvant radiation therapy. Adjuvant Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) treatment Adjuvant therapy is not routinely advised for patients with ductal carcinoma in situ. However Tamoxifen has been shown to decrease the risk of secondary breast cancer in women with high risk of breast cancer including women with history of ductal carcinoma in situ.....
