Diagnostic tools: If pancreas cancer is suspected in a patient, the most common test used to make a diagnosis is CT scan of the abdomen. The CT scan in many cases may detect the tumor in the region of the pancreas. In addition to CT scan, ultrasonograpy or MRI may also be used to find the pancreatic tumor. Once a tumor is seen, definite diagnosis is usually obtained by doing a biopsy. Biopsy may be done using a needle under visualization under CT scan or by passing a tube through the stomach and reaching at the pancreas (endoscopy and biopsy). A blood test known as CA-19-9 may be sometimes useful in making the diagnosis of pancreas cancer.
