Vaccine may increase survival in advanced non-small cell lung cancer

Biomira and Merck KGaA have reported the updated survival analysis of their completed phase IIB study of an investigational immunotherapy vaccine in lung. This shows patients with stage IIIB non-small cell lung cancer, who received the vaccine, have not yet reached median survival 23 months post accrual.

This survival update is on a randomized, open-label phase IIB trial of L-BLP25 in 171 men and women with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), whose disease was stable or who had responded to treatment following standard first-line standard or a combination of standard chemotherapy drugs and radiotherapy has just been completed.

The study's investigators are planning to submit the updated survival results from this analysis for presentation at an upcoming scientific meeting and for publication in a peer reviewed medical journal.

This data is very encouraging as per the company spokesman and the company is planning to continue to a phase III trial. In preparation for this potential multinational registration trial, Biomira is already scheduling for the manufacture of new vaccine supplies.
